1.How are the the Gazetted Railway services staff classified in indian railway for purpose of visual standards ?
Divided into 2 categories
Technical services:-
Railway Engineering Services (Civil, Electrical, Signal, and Mechanical)
Indian Railway Traffic Service.
Special Class Railway Apprentices.
Posts in the Marine Establishments.
Indian Railway Health Service
Non technical services:-
Indian Railway Accounts Service.
Indian Railway Stores Service.
Railway Protection Force.
Railway Board Secretariat Services, class I and class II.
Chemists and Metallurgists.
All other class I and class II services on the Railways which are not connected with the train working or use of trolleys.
From 2020 onwards IRMS is created (Indian Railway Management Service)
IRMS under five specialities — four of them engineering specialities for ‘technical’ operations comprising of civil, mechanical, telecom and electrical, and one ‘non-technical’ speciality which will recruit officers for accounts, personnel and traffic.
Visual Standards at the time of appointment of Gazetted Railway service staff:

In respect of technical services, the total amount of myopia(including cylinder) should not
exceed -4 Diopters and the total amount of Hypermetropia should not exceed +4 Diopter
2.How are the the non-Gazetted Railway services staff classified in indian railway for purpose of visual standards ?
Classified into 3 categories
Category A
A-1. Foot plate staff, Rail car drivers and Navigating staff
A-2. Other running staff, Other shunting staff, Point lockers Station masters, and other staff in operative control of signals.
Category B
B-1 Such station and yard non supervisory, shed and other of the employee himself or his fellow staff , excluding shed man, as are engaged on duties where workers or both. failing eye sight may endanger themselves or other employees from moving vehicles, road motor drivers, permanent way mistries, gang mates, key men, staff of the Railway Protection Force(RPF).
B-2 Certain staff in workshops and engine rooms engaged onduties when failing eye sight may endanger themselves or other employees from moving parts of the machinery and crane drivers on open line.
Catergory C
C-1. Other workshop and engine room staff, shed stockers and other staff in whom higher standard of vision than is required in clerical and kindred occupation is necessary for reasons of efficiency and others not coming in group A or B
C-2 Staff in clerical occupations not included in A,B and C-1
Visual Standards at the time of appointment of non-Gazetted Railway service staff:

3.Is the use of contact lens allowed at the time of examination for appointment ?
NO .
4.What about Colour vision ?
Should be normal when tested with both the Ishihara's Plates and Edridge's Green Lantern
5.What if i have squint ?
For technical services presence of squint even if the visual acuity is of prescribed standard, should be considered a disqualification.
For other services the presence of squint should not be considered as a disqualification if the visual acuity is of prescribed standard.
6.What if i have one eye blind ?
One eyed person:- For all technical services, all posts in the medical department, all posts in
Railway protection force, and Chemists and Metallurgists, one eyed persons should be considered unfit.
For employment in other categories the Medical board may recommend such one eyed persons provided that it is satisfied that he/she can perform all the functions of the particular job for which he/she is a candidate.
7.Any Relaxation of above condition? It shall be open to Government to relax any of the conditions in favour of any candidate for special reasons.
8.In whom Fundus /Retina - Full Ophthalmology Examination is done ?
for all candidates in A-1
for categories C-1 and C-2 when the power of lenses exceeds 4 D to exclude progressive eye disease
9.Is LASIK allowed at the time of appointment ?
NO
10.Is PRK allowed at the time of appointment ?
may not be considered for recruitment to A-1, A-2, A-3 and B-1 categories.
However candidates with such operation may be considered for recruitment in B-2 categories and below, if other wise medically fit.
